Ton van Vugt: Initiatiefnemer en Webmaster:

Ton is van Nederlandse afkomst, heeft nu de Australische nationaliteit en woont in Amerika. Hij heeft gewerkt en gewoont in verschillende werelddelen zoals: Afrika; Asie; Australie: Europa; het Midden Oosten en Amerika.

Hij heeft in het zakenleven gewerkt (aardolie en uitgeverijen); met een regerings instantie die verantwoordelijk was voor de planning, constructie en ontwikkeling van de Australische hoofdstad; en ook voor de Australische ministeries van Financien en Binnenlandse Zaken. Daarna ging hij werken als een internationale ambtenaar als ontwikkelings bankier.

In 1979 ging hij voor de Asiatische Ontwikkelings Bank in Manila, de Filipijnen, werken. In 1982 ging hij naar Washingtom DC om daar voor de Wereld Bank te werken als een Senior Financial Analyst en Economist in 1995 en daarna stichte hij zijn firma International  Development Associates als hoofddirecteur en internationaal Ontwikkelings adviseur.

Tot aan zijn pensioenering to was hij was een lid van de Australian Society van Accountants met de graad van Fellow. Hij was ook afgestuurd als een Cost Accountant. Hij was een Associate van het Engels Institute of Chartered Company Secretaries en Administrators. Hij is een Senior Associate van he Australian Institute of Managers. Hij heeft een graad in economie met cum laude in Public Finance van de Australische National Universiteit. Hij ontving een medalje van de Australische Societeit van Accountants voor zijn werk in Business Finance.

Met pensioen gaan betekende niet dat hij stil ging zitten:

• Namens de Winlink amateur radio systeem voor privee zeilboten op de hogezee beinvloede hij de Australische regering om de wetten en regelemeten te veranderen om dit systeem ook in Australie op te kunnen zetten. Hij is daarin geslaagd en een groot gedeelte van de zuidelijke halfrond is nu gedekt door land radio stations die van uit Australie werken (Bekijk: www.aussiewinlink.org.)
   

•  Hij organiseerde en leide de herdenking in 2007 van de hongertochten van 1944-45. De heruitvoering van de hongertocht trok duizenden deelnemers van Nederland en het buitenland aan en was gerapporteerd in de Nederlandse pers, tijdbladen, radio en televisie (Bekijk www.hongertocht.org.)

Ton geeft een speech in de Grote Kerk in Hattem

• In Australie stichte hij en was de eerste voorzitter en Directeur van de Snowy River Ski Club dat hun eigen chalet liet bouwen in het Kosciusko Nationaal Park in Australie's Snowy Mountains.
   

• Hij is een zeiler met internationale ervaring met recente zeiltochten naar de Bahamas eilanden; de Caribbische zee en een vaart door het Panama Kanaal (Bekijk www.van-vugt.com/trilogy). In verband met HH400 zijn wetenschap van de Amerikaanse oostkust, de Chesapeake en Delaware baaien en de binnenlandse waterweg zou te pas kunnen komen.
   

• Hij is een lid, en voormalig comite medewerker als communicatie officier, van de Corinthians Sailing Association. Hij is ooklid van de Seven Seas Cruising Association en heeft geschreven in het Commodores Bulletin.

Ton krijgt hulp van Genie van Vugt - Kersten, zijn vrouw voor meer dan vijftig jaren en is ook van Nederlandse afkomst. Hij ontmoete haar in 1955 in Australia. Zij werkte voor Shell en later voor het Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies. Hun drie kinderen wonen ook aan de oostkust van Amerika. Genie helpt met corrigeren van email.

Riet Soeters: Vertegenwoordiger en Coordinator in Nederland

Riet Soeters is een lid van Ton's uitgebreide familie. Zij heeft met hem samengewerkt met een onderzoek en was de vertegenwoordiger in Nederland voor de Hongertocht organisatie.

Zij heeft veel onderzoek gedaan voor het book dat door Ton geschreven werd over zijn vader en zijn familie's ervaringen gedurende de tweede wereld oorlog. Dat houdt ook in zijn oorlogstijd herinneringen toen Ton (12 jaar oude) met zijn zusje Annie (6 jaar) met hun moeder deelnamen aan de hongertocht van 1944-45 in Nederland. De verhalen zijn gepubliceerd als een boek en op de Internet.

Riet speelde de voornaamste rol in Nederland als vertegenwoordiger voor het organiseren van de hongertocht heruitvoering in 2007. She had een uitgebreide rol inclusief de liaison met regeringsinstanties; met medewerkers in andere plaatsen; met een collega die een film gemaakt heeft van de heruitvoering; en met de pers, radio en television stations. Ze heeft ook geholpen met de verzameling van hongerwinter verhalen van vele overlevenden en het verzamelen van fotoos die met die tijd te maken hebben.

Riet (en Koos) organiseerd de start van de hongertocht

Ze heeft goedgunstig aangeboden om opnieuw mee te werken om contact te houden met de met de pers en publieke relaties en met andere die betrokken met het verspreiden van informatie de fondsenwerving voor de eigenaars die aan het denken zijn om deel te nemen met hun boten met de festiviteiten in de haven van New York.

Zij werkt bij de gemeente [ ] die aan de [ ] rivier ligd. Daar zeilen veel traditionele schepen voorbij voor hun plezier of om deel te nemen aan historische nautische evenementen. Ze woont in Rotterdam the largest harbor in the world, en daarom heeft zij veel van de havens en schepen gezien.

Jacobus F. Baker & Ton Zaal: Adviseurs and Vertalers

Jacobus F. Bakker, genoemd "Jake" door zijn vrienden, bood gelijk zijn hulp aan met de fondsenwerving. Omdat hij vloeien Nederland en Angels kan spreken en schrijven helpt hij nu met het vertalen van het Engels naar het Nederlands vvor het webdsite. Jake nam ook deel aan de heruitvoering van de Hongertocht die georganiseerd was door Ton van Vugt in 2007. Jake kwan van Amerika om mee te doen.

Jake was geboren en getogen in Utrecht.  Na de Handeldagsschool and HBS in 1951 naar Indonesia vertrokken als staf employee van de grote handelszaak Jacobson van den Bergh. Hij woonde en werkte daar in Jakarta, Tjirebon, Purwokerto en Makassar.  In Januari 1958 per boot van Singapore naar San Francisco als emigrant naar Amerika waar hij op 13 Maart aankwam. 

Jake (en een medewandelaar) op de hongertocht

Op 9 Mei 1958 ging hij als soldaat het Amerikaanse leger in en werd daardoor, hem onbewust, onder een toenmalige Nederlandse wet statenloos. Werd Amerikaans staatsburger en kreeg een directe Presidentieele benoeming tot leger officier in 1964. Gestationeerd in Duitsland, Korea, Vietnam en Turkije.  Na twintig dienstjaren werd hij in 1978 gepensioeneerd in de rang van Luitenant Kolonel.

Zonder een dag werk te verliezen werd hij burgerambtenaar bij de Amerikaanse Kustwacht (Coast Guard) en vervolgens bij de Amerikaanse luchtmacht.  Aangelokt door een zaak die grote contracten heeft met de Amerikaanse regering, vroeg hij na een dikke 28 jaar als burgerambtenaar (Kolonel-equivalent) zijn pensioen aan in November 2006. Hij werkt nu als “contract employee” bij het Bureau Nationale Garde (National Guard Bureau).

Ton Zaal:

Ton Zaal woont in Nederland en is een vriend van een van de eigenaars die geinteresserd is om mee te doen met hun boot in de avtiviteiten in de Haven van New York. Ton is een voormalig bankier die, onder anderen, gewoont en gewerkt heeft in Nigeria en de Nederlandse Antillen.

Dick en Nel van Belle zijn vrienden die beide ook mee gedaan hebben aan de Hongertocht heruitvoering. Dick verschafte hulp hoofdzakelijk met op het Internet zoeken en contact op te nemen met mogenlijke deelnemers. Hij doet dat ook voor onze nieuwe gezamelijke actie. Hij was de eerste die naar voren kwam om the helpen met de fondsenwerving actie.

Wij staan haast dagelijks met hem in contact via Skype en hij regeld altijd gelijk ale vraagstukken die met de Internet en persoonlijke contacten te maken hebben in Nederland. Dick en zijn vrouw Nel wonen in Rotterdam.

Nel & Dick van Belle

Piet and Nel van den Hurk zijn actief aan het werken om hun bijdrage te maken aan het succes van het evenement in New York.
Ze hebben aangeboden om hun zeer mooie gerestaureerde traditioneel Nederlands schip beschikbaar te stellen voor de festiviteiten. Ze weken hard om een bijdrage te maken aan HH400.

De kost om hun boor te transporteren naar Amerika is helaas buiten hun begroting. Jammer genoeg zijn HH400 en de Stichting voor de Promotie van he Traditionale Schip (SPTS) er niet in geslaagd om fondsen te werven van de normale sponsors en hebben aangekondigt dat deelnemers aan hun eigen lot over gelaten worden.

Een copie van de zeer goed in alkaar gezette packet bereikte ons in Amerika. Na een onderzoek van het bedoelde evenement en de geschiktheid van hun boot "Pieternel" en hun ervaring als schippers waren wij er van overtuigd dat hun de eerste zijn die gerechtigd om deel te nemen aan de fondsenwerving.

Nel and Piet van den Hurk

Ze zijn een typisch Nederlands echtpaar die hun brood verdiende met het bevaren van de Nederlandse kanalen en rivieren met hun commercieele boot. Nel schreef (paraphrasen) "Piet en ik zijn al voor 47 jaar getrouwd. Piet is 74 en ik ben 66 jaren oud. Ik kom van een schippers familie en leerde Piet kennen op het water. Om bij onze zoon te kunnen blijven zijn wij aan de wal gegaan en hebben daar voor 20 jaren een voorzienings bedrijf gehad voor commercieele en plezier boten. Wij gingen toen ook zeilen als een hobbie. in 1984 ontdekte wij de casco van een traditionele Zeeuwe Poon. Over de jaren en hard work hebben wij die met liefde gerestaureerd tot de huidige conditie.

Anthony (Ton) Van Vugt: Originator and Webmaster

Tony Van Vugt is of Dutch origin, is an Australian citizen and resides in the United States. He has worked and lived in several continents, including: Africa; Asia; Australia; Europe; the Middle East and North America.

He has worked in the private sector (Oil & Publishing); with a statutory planning, construction and development authority responsible for establishing Australia’s national capital; and for the Australian Departments of Finance and the Interior. Subsequently he became an international civil servant working as an international development banker.

Hence in 1979, he joined the Asian Development Bank in Manila, the Philippines, as a Financial Analyst. In 1982 he departed for Washington DC to join the World Bank as Senior Financial Analyst and Economist. He retired as a Project Manager in 1995 and thereafter headed his own firm International Development Associates as CEO and international development specialist till 2000.

Till his retirement he retained membership of the Australian Society of Accountants with the grade of Fellow. He completed also his studies as Cost Accountant. He was an Associated of the UK-based Chartered Institute of Company Secretaries and Administrators. In Australia he was a Senior Associate of the Australian Institute of Management. He holds a Bachelors degree in Economics with Honors in Public Finance from the Australian National University. He was awarded the Australian Society of Accountants Medal for his studies in Corporate Finance.

Retirement didn’t mean resting on one’s laurels:

• He successfully lobbied the Australian government on behalf of the Winlink radio communication system for recreational sailboats to change Australian laws and regulations to make operation legal in Australia. Now that this has succeeded, vessels in a large part of the southern hemisphere are in reach of radio ground stations based in Australia (Visit: www.aussiewinlink.org.) 
   

• He organized and managed the commemoration in 2007 of the Hongertochten of 1944-45.The reenactment attracted thousands of local and international participants and received attention in the Dutch and international press, magazines, radio and TV (Visit: www.hongertocht.org).

Tony leads (with grandson Ben) and gives an interview

• In Australia he founded and was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Snowy River Ski Club that established its own chalet in the Kosciusko National Park in Australia's Snowy Mountains.
   

• He is an international experienced yachtsman with recent journeys to the Bahamas Islands; the Caribbean and a transit of the Panama Canal (www.van-vugt.com/trilogy.) In respect of HH400, his knowledge of the US East Coast; the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays and environs and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) would be an asset to assist possible participants.
   

• He is a member, and formerly on the Afterguard as the Communications Officer, of the Corinthians Sailing Association. He also is a member of the international Seven Seas Cruising Association and wrote for the Commodores' Bulletin.

Tony is assisted by Genie Van Vugt - Kersten - his wife for more than 50 years, who is of Dutch heritage also. They met in Australia in 1955. She worked with Shell Oil and later for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies. They have three children who all live on the US east coast. Genie assists with correspondence and proof reading.

Riet Soeters: Representative and Coordinator in the Netherlands.

Riet Soeters is a member of Tony's extended family and has collaborated with him on research projects and as the representative in the Netherlands for the Hongertocht Reenactment organisation.

She did the basic research for Tony's publication "Finding Father" that describes his search about his late-Father's and his family's travails during the Second World War. That included his wartime experience where Tony, than 11, and his sister Annie, than six, took part with their mother in the infamous hunger march of 1944-45 in the Netherlands.The material was published in bookform and on the Internet.

Riet Soeters

Riet played a lead role as the representative in the Netherland to organize the reenactment of the hunger march in August 2007. She had a multifaceted role that included liaison with government and other local government officials; with associates in other parts of the country that provided general support; coordinated with a colleague that produced a film of the event; and with the Press, Radio and TV. She also assisted with assembling the recollections of survivors from that era and the compilation of an album of associated photographs.

She has gracefully agreed to play the lead role again in the liaison with the press, public and personal relations; with all major parties involved in the information and fundraising campaign for the owner/skippers that are considering participating in the HH400 festivities.

Professionaly she works in local government situated along one of the major rivers in the Netherlands on which many of the traditional vessels travel for pleasure or to take part in historic nautical events. She lives in Rotterdam, the largest harbor in the world, so she has firsthand impressions of the subject matter.

Jacobus F. Baker & Ton Zaal: Advisors and Translators

Jake, to his friends, lives in the United States, and like Tony, in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Jake had participated in the reenactment of the Hunger March that had been organized by Tony Van Vugt in 2007. Jake had travelled from the US to participate. He immediately offered his service to assist with the development of this website. Being fluent in both English and Dutch he is assisting with the translation from English to Dutch for the website. With his military background he can always be relied upon to meet deadlines.

Jake was born and raised in Utrecht. After completing the School of Commerce and Advanced High School he departed for Indonesia as a staff employee of a large Dutch trading company in Indonesia, Jacobson van den Bergh. He lived and worked in Jakarta, Tjirebon (now Cirebon), Purwokerto and Makassar. In January 1958 he sailed by boat from Singapore to San Francisco as an immigrant to the United States where he arrived on 13 March 1958

In May 1958 he enlisted in the United States Army as a private and as a result, unbeknownst to him, became stateless under an old Dutch law then still in force. He was naturalized as an American citizen and was awarded a direct Presidential commission as a United States Army Officer in 1964. He was stationed in Germany, Korea, Vietnam and Turkey. After twenty years of service he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1978.

Jake leads a contingent in the Hunger March

Without losing a day’s work he became a civil servant first with the US Coast Guard and then with the US Air Force. Enticed by a large enterprise with big contracts with the US Government, he retired from the Civil Service after more than 28 years of service in November 2006. He now works as a “contract employee” with the National Guard Bureau.

Ton Zaal:

Ton Zaal lives in the Netherlands and is befriended with owners of Pieternel. Piet & Nel van den Hurk that would like to participate with their boat in the activities in New York. Ton is a retired Bank Manager who has worked and lived, among other, in Nigeria in Africa and the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean.

Dick and Nel van BELLE are friends that participated in the reenactment of the Hunger March. Dick provided help with Internet searches and maintaining contacts with organizations and individuals that were interested in the event. He was the first one to step forward to offer his services for our current fundraising effort.

We are in daily audio/visual contact with him using Skype, the Voice-over-Internet protocol, and he immediately assists to get resolution on questions that have to do with the Internet and with locating and talking with contacts in the Netherlands. He and his wife Nel, live in Rotterdam.

Nel van Belle liep zelfs mee na haar heupoperatie

Piet and Nel van den Hurk are actively campaigning to contribute to the success of the forthcoming "platbodem" event in New York Harbor. They have offered to make their beautifully restored traditional Dutch shallow-draft boat available for the celebrations in New York. They have actively promoted the interests of HH400.

The cost of transporting their boat to the US is outside their budget. Unfortunately, both HH400 and the Dutch counterpart organization, the "Organization for the Preservation of Traditional Ships", have failed in raising funds from traditional sources and have told potential participants that they have to find their own sponsors.

A copy of their well-prepared portfolio reached us in the US and after investigating the proposed event and the suitability of their boat named "Pieternel" and their experience as skippers we were convinced that they qualified as the first one to be eligible for participation in the fundraising effort.

They are a typical Dutch couple that made a living plying the Dutch canals and rivers with their commercial boat. Nel wrote (paraphrasing): "Piet and I are married already for 47 years.  Piet is 74 and I am 66 years old. I hail from a skippers family and I got to know Piet on the water. To be with our son we went to live on shore and ran for 20 years a supply business for commercial and pleasure boaters. We also took up sailing as a hobby. In 1984 we discovered the hull of a traditional Zeeuwsche Poon en over many years of hard work we lovingly restored it to its present condition."
